Financial Independence, Retire Early

About FIRE Calculator

A modern, transparent, and mathematically rigorous retirement modeling tool designed to help you quantify your freedom with clarity, privacy, and speed.

1. The Mathematics Behind the Calculator

The core premise of Financial Independence is simple: when your invested net worth produces sufficient passive yield to permanently cover your living expenses, working for money becomes optional. Our calculator models this trajectory using three time-tested pillars:

The 4% Rule & 25x Target

Originating from the landmark 1998 Trinity Study and William Bengen’s 1994 research, withdrawing 4% of your initial portfolio (adjusted annually for inflation) had a 95%+ historical success rate over a 30-year span in balanced stock/bond allocations.

FIRE Number = Annual Expenses ÷ SWR = Annual Expenses × 25

Inflation-Adjusted Real Returns

Over 15 to 30 years, inflation dramatically diminishes purchasing power. Rather than inflating future dollars into deceptive multi-millions, our calculator calculates all projections in constant purchasing power using the exact Fisher equation.

r_real = (1 + r_nominal) ÷ (1 + Inflation) − 1

Compound Growth & Annuity Accumulation

Each projected year accounts for two simultaneous wealth engines: the compound interest earned on your starting principal (P₀), plus the cumulative growth of your ongoing annual savings (S):

Portfolio(t) = P₀ × (1 + r)^t + S × [ ((1 + r)^t − 1) ÷ r ]
